"The kids are excited to be playing," Novick said. "Each day we've gotten closer to the first fake, they've stepped up in practice. Every day I've seen more and more progression."

According to Coach Novick, the backbone of his team features three Tory-handed pitchers: Ciago, Novick and Anselmo.

Village anglers are reporting more bait fish in the area, mostly sardines, which is always a good sign. Not only is the bait inshore, first of all near the Capitola Wharf, but it's balling up near the Soquel Hole. Also, salmon anglers are getting fired up for another try at the violently-fighting and delicious kings.

Rockfish and lingcod still take top billing in our area. The local kelp beds are more productive, but deeper reefs can garner quicker limits.

Ken Stagnaro from Stagnaro's Sportfishing took edge of diminished winds Monday, fishing as far north as Davenport. Despite a good bump on the water from the before-mentioned day's winds, Stagnaro reports near limits for those aboard the Velocity, including "several 6-pound reds and some pronounced 4- to 5-pound coppers."

Capitola Boat and Bait had similar reports for the week with a mixture of rockfish and the supplementary lingcod reported caught near the kelp beds and the deeper reefs.
